Competition for Young Composers 2008

Designed to stimulate the composition of contemporary classical music by young composers living in England and Wales, this competition is financially supported by the Batty Charitable Trust.

The competition will be divided into two age categories:
  • Category A: Individuals under the age of 16 on 31 August 2008
  • Category B: Individuals under the age of 18 on 31 August 2008
The Composition
The composition in Category A should not exceed 3 minutes in length, and that in Category B should not exceed 6 minutes in length. Pieces for either category can be scored for an ensemble consisting of any of the following instruments, or a solo instrument accompanied by piano, or solo piano:
  • Flute, oboe, clarinet (in B flat or A,) bassoon, horn and piano
The composition must be submitted in handwritten or computer set manuscript; recorded compositions or graphic scores cannot be accepted (please download our document which gives advice for the preparation of scores and parts: Adobe PDF format | MS Word format).

The closing date for the receipt of entries is Monday 3 March 2008.

The Prizes
There will be a prize for the winner of each of the two age categories as outlined above; it is not intended to have an overall winner:
  • Category A: £75 in book tokens
  • Category B: £100 in book tokens
The Prize-winners' Concert
The two prize-winners will be announced in the week prior to the opening of the 2008 Hampstead and Highgate Festival. The winning compositions together with other entries that have been highly commended by the panel of judges will be performed by members of the Zephyr Ensemble of London during a concert promoted by the Hampstead and Highgate Festival at the Parish Church of St John-at-Hampstead, London on Monday 12 May 2008 at 6pm. The concert will also include a performance of Martin Butler's Dirty Beasts and singing from local school choirs. The prize-winners will be notified beforehand and must attend the concert.

The Judges
The judges are renowned composers well-known for their work with young musicians.
